Yamamoto - Story 3 (Lauren)

Three forms of media that this section reminded me of are drones, virtual reality, and online dating. First, drones are like “‘eyes’ that watch over the surface” (86). Although I am a little skeptical about drones, I think they do provide an optimistic/hopeful look into the future. With drones, we are able to conduct advanced scientific research in hard-to-reach areas, coordinate security operations, make inspections in difficult or dangerous scenarios, and have good surveillance. Second, the mirror in this section makes me think of virtual reality, “unlike a television, offer[ing] the illusion of depth” (94). Virtual reality also allows us to see things from a different perspective. It can be helpful for people who are not as privileged to “travel” and explore the world through VR. Also VR, redefines the idea of communication, it can train people in a way that might otherwise put them at risk, it allows those who are not able to fully experience reality, such as disabled people, to be able to, and provides the opportunity to experience things that are impossible in real life. Third, I thought of online dating when talking about “even if Shalice’s responses to me were all a fiction, my cherished friendship with her was genuine” (106). Not only online dating, but having any sort of relationship online. This can be optimistic, because people who have difficulties making friends or finding love “in real life” are given an opportunity to do those things online.


I would say that two, sort of broad, but important “events” or revelations that make up “the glorious past of humans” are the invention of language and agriculture. Language and agriculture are two aspects that civilizations could not survive or prosper without. Language allows for understanding of each other and identity within each single civilization. Agriculture provides society with food in order to stay alive.

a) In my own experience with the use of virtual spaces, I find it difficult to develop complex interpersonal relationships. It is possible to begin relationships through the use of virtual spaces, however I do not think it is possible to maintain any type of relationship unless the relationship is sought beyond the virtual space and into a real and intimate space. This is true especially if the relationship happens between a fully real entity. Yamamoto - Story 7 (Lauren)

provide an overview of your thoughts, feelings, ideas, responses to the book as a whole Overall, I liked the book. I think the idea of sending a message through storytelling is very interesting. The future is essentially unpredictable, but Yamamoto’s book offers an interesting interpretation with Artificial Intelligence. I really like how optimistic the book is, because most of us tend to be afraid of what might happen with AI, but there are a lot of positive aspects to appreciate about technology (as long as we don’t lose control of it).
