Story 2
a) In today's society people can meet virtually all the time via social media and the internet. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder, Bumble, these are all ways that people can meet virtually before they meet in person (if they even want to). Just like in Ibis's second story, meeting in person is a choice people can make after they connect online and see each others profiles. I generally meet people and then "friend" them or "follow" them on social media. However, a lot of people meet their significant others through dating apps. Before meeting, online relationships are fully virtual. I do not think it is possible to have the same kind of relationship virtually versus in real life. There is an intimacy between real people that cannot In the book, Subaru and Mizuki are able to interact virtually and play a game together. They have the ability to learn each others personalities before they meet in reality. Is this where the future of dating apps and social media is headed?
b) Historical events/media
1. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338459/
In this movie the kids go into a virtual video game to defeat their enemy. They still look like themselves but are dressed differently and have different abilities. This is like the Dream Land video games Subaru and Mizuki play in the story.
- Electronic Self (ES)
- V-wear vs. R-wear (the way the video game characters dress)
- Inside a virtual game (Subaru and Mizuki)
2. The history of virtual reality:
https://www.vrs.org.uk/virtual-reality/history.html
This website shows all the past events that led to todays virtual reality. This ties in with the MUGEN and NONMaRS equipment in the book. Is this were virtual reality tools will go to in the future?
3. Dinosaurs - Jurassic Park:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107290/
The virtual video game couldn't help but make me think of the iconic movie Jurassic Park and the dinosaurs. Inspiration for that video game probably partly came from this movie if it were actually a real story. I wonder what kinds of media we produce today will turn into virtual reality games in the future.
c) I think that The Stories of Ibis is a great way to think about technology and digital culture. Even though it is fiction, the set up of the book allows for so much thinking and analyzing of our digital culture and the future of technology. Being an anthology of short fictitious stories allows readers to see different worlds within another fictional world. This book opens up for free thinking and more imaginative and broad views of where digital culture could be headed. The translation of the book doesn't have much of an effect on my as a reader because I can put the characters into any context in my head and it works with the stories.
