Chapter 8 & 9 (Louis Barry)

In Chapter 8 & 9 Davis talks about the world wide web (www), and how it connects everyone together. That got me thinking. If the world is held together by a web, the web is held together by the myriad knots that secure each of its strands. Knots are highly charged energy centers, nodes, where the tentacles intersect, connect and diverge, like station depots on a railway map. Knots are featured all but universally in the religious practices of most cultures. Jewish prayer shawls are fringed with knotted threads. Rosaries were knotted cords before they were made of beads. The knot is one of the eight sacred symbols of Buddhism. The shrines and altars at Shinto holy places are guarded by large swags of woven straw rope hung with knotted cloth and paper, each representing a prayer or blessing. It is common for travelers to tie a knot on their own wrists and then one on the wrists of all their near and dear. In our technological era, these knots represent all the areas that we explore when using the world wide web. The more knots we have the more knotledge we have.

a) In my own experience with the use of virtual spaces, I find it difficult to develop complex interpersonal relationships. It is possible to begin relationships through the use of virtual spaces, however I do not think it is possible to maintain any type of relationship unless the relationship is sought beyond the virtual space and into a real and intimate space. This is true especially if the relationship happens between a fully real entity. Yamamoto - Story 7 (Lauren)

provide an overview of your thoughts, feelings, ideas, responses to the book as a whole Overall, I liked the book. I think the idea of sending a message through storytelling is very interesting. The future is essentially unpredictable, but Yamamoto’s book offers an interesting interpretation with Artificial Intelligence. I really like how optimistic the book is, because most of us tend to be afraid of what might happen with AI, but there are a lot of positive aspects to appreciate about technology (as long as we don’t lose control of it).
