Davis Chapter 3 (Louis Barry)
Throughout the third chapter, there were plenty of technologies that brought electricity and information together. In the beginning, there were the gnostics codices that basically "threatens to change everything"(74). Erik Davis constantly spoke about the war over information. Even at the beginning of civilization, there was a scare of change.
After the technologies that the Gnostic codices Davis brought up the atomic bomb, and how it was a bomb for mass destruction, but it was a bomb of information. This definitely did not come without nightmares, especially when it comes from "electronic media's increasing ability to mesmerize hearts and minds"(76) of people.
When Claude Shannon, introduced the birth of information theory, many embraced this idea. "The integrity of messages can be maintained by translating them into digital codes of varying degrees of complexity, redundancy, and bandwidth"(80). One must use this "ideal code" to achieve this what Erik Davis says "noiseless communication". From that ideal code, he related these digital codes like they where nucleotides, and how each code is different. "DNA continues to be characterized as the ONLY driver in the cockpit of creation"(85). DNA is the "code of life".
Something that caught my eye was when Davis was talking cybernetics. It got me thinking. When Wiener described cybernetics circuits and how they "constantly adjust themselves"(87). This is exactly what AI does. It takes the data that is found and improves itself.
